This is an elementary course in basic seamanship, navigation and meteorology, suitable for beginners and people with little experience in yachts. By the end of the course, participants will have experienced steering a yacht, sail handling, rope work and be aware of safety on board.

This is a 2 day course. There is no minimum age limit or prerequisites to starting this course.

You will learn about:

  • Basic knots, securing ropes, use of winches and jamming cleats<
  • How to steer the yacht under sail or power
  • You will gain experience sailing a yacht on all points of sail
  • Safety equipment on board
  • How to keep an efficient lookout at sea
  • Where to obtain a weather forecast
  • Understand the action required to recover a man overboard
  • Understand the rules for wearing of safety harnesses, lifejackets and personal buoyancy aids
  • The hazards on board a yacht
  • The actions to be taken in the event of an emergency

At the end of the course you receive a RYA Certificate to recognise your achievement. You need only complete a further three days sailing to obtain your RYA Competent Crew Certificate.

The course is recognised by Yachting Australia and the Royal Yachting Association. Instructors are qualified to at least Yacht Master Level and aim to provide an enjoyable and fun experience as well as quality tuition. Certificates are recognised overseas.
