Course Summary:

This two day course is an essential pre-requisite for anyone seeking employment in the maritime industry.  Successful completion of this course along with Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (Basic Fire), Elementary First Aid and Personal Safety and Social Responsibility can lead to the issue of AMSA’s Certificate of Safety Training.

This course is for seafarers who intend to work as a general purpose hand on any sea going vessel.  It is designed to give you the basic skills and knowledge required to survive at sea in the event of vessel abandonment.

What the course covers:

  • Duties of any crew member in relation to surviving at sea in the case of vessel abandonment.
  • Types of life jackets
  • Immersion suits
  • Thermal protection suits
  • Lifeboats
  • Raft and lifeboat launching systems
  • Flares
  • Emergency procedures
  • Participate in abandon vessel drills
  • Operate lifesaving and survival equipment
  • Practise survival techniques

Where:

The course is conducted on site at Australasian Maritime Institute, Henderson and consists of both theory and practical components. It is conducted in accordance with the requirements of STCW regulation VI/1 Code Section A-VI/1 Table A-VI/1-1 of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watch Keeping for Seafarers 1978, as amended. There are written, oral and practical assessments held throughout the course.
