Elementary Senior First Aid
About this course:
This two day course is an essential pre-requisite for anyone seeking employment in the maritime industry. Successful completion of this course along with Person Safety Techniques, Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (Basic Fire) and Personal Safety and Social Responsibility can lead to the issue of AMSA’s Certificate of Safety Training.
This course is for seafarers who intend to work as a general purpose hand on any sea going vessel. It is designed to give you the basic skills and knowledge required to provide elementary first aid on board a vessel or at another maritime workplace, including the performance of immediate lifesaving first aid until qualified medical assistance is available.
What the course covers:
- Duties of any crew member in relation to providing first aid care to another crew member
- Cardio pulmonary resuscitation
- Expired air resuscitation
- Immobilisation of fractures and breaks
- Preventing blood loss
- Reassuring the patient
- Drug usage
- Duty of care
- Regulations
- Emergency procedures
- Recognise the symptoms and signs of acute illness and/or injury and take appropriate action
- Manage burns
- Adapt first aid procedures for remote situations
Where:
The course is conducted on site at Australasian Maritime Institute, Henderson and consists of both theory and practical components. It is conducted in accordance with the requirements of STCW Regulation VI/1 Code Section A-VI/1 Table A-VI/1-3 of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watch Keeping for Seafarers 1978, as amended. There are written, oral and practical assessments held throughout the course.
