AMSA’s Certificate of Safety Training
Minimum requirement to work as a General Purpose Hand on any Sea Going Vessel
Whilst the Standards of Training Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) for Seafarers Code covers all certification and training across the entire maritime industry, the term STCW or STCW 95 is normally used to describe the basic maritime safety training that all crew must undertake before they can go to sea. The Certificate of Safety Training is issued by AMSA in Australia, when students produce evidence of competency in the following four courses. The training must be conducted by an AMSA approved Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
AMSA’s Certificate of Safety Training course is aimed at a person wishing to work as a Crew Member or a General Purpose Hand on any sea going vessel. This eight day course is designed to provide students with knowledge, skills and proficiency in various types of emergency situations and survival at sea scenarios. The course provides students with the necessary qualification required in the maritime industry as the first stepping stone to a pathway for a professional and successful career at sea.
Personal Survival Techniques (PST) – 1.5 Day Course
(STCW Regulation VI/1 Code Section A-VI/1 Table A-VI/1-1)
TDMMF1107B Survive at sea in the event of vessel abandonment
The course consists of subjects such as emergency situations, evacuation, survival craft, rescue boats, personal lifesaving appliances, survival at sea, emergency radio equipment, helicopter assistance and includes a practical exercise in sea survival.
Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (Basic Fire) – 3 Day Course
(STCW Regulation VI/1 Code Section A-VI/1 Table A-VI/1-2)
TDMMF6207A Prevent, control and fight fires on board an ocean-going vessel.
The course consists of subjects such as shipboard fire fighting organisation, the elements of fire, types of ignition, fire and smoke detection, breathing apparatus use, automatic alarm system familiarisation, extinguisher usage, classes of fire and teamwork exercises.
Elementary First Aid (EFA) – 2 Day Course

TDMMF1007B Provide elementary first aid.
Knives, fishing gear, venomous sea life, galleys and engine spaces – as well as a range of potential accidents – provide endless opportunities for injury at sea. This course teaches the fundamental principles, knowledge and essential practical skills to enable the first aider to administer a wide range of emergency care to aid a victim of injury and illness until professional medical help is on hand. The course provides a good grounding in first aid and qualifies students to perform life supporting techniques.
Personal Safety and Social Responsibility (PSSR) – 1.5 Day Course
(STCW Regulation VI/1 Code Section A-VI/1 Table A-VI/1-4)
TDMMF5607A Observe personal safety and social responsibility
The course covers working relationships on board, health and hygiene, drugs and alcohol, shipboard management structure and responsibilities, emergencies and safe working practices as well as pollution regulations under MARPOL.
The above units meet with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) requirements for the Certificate of Safety Training under Marine Orders Part 3 Issue 6 Section C 20.2(b).
