Chardonnay Coast Sailing | Principal | Chief Instructor

RYA/YA Accredited Yachtmaster Offshore Instructor

Alan’s love of the ocean began early on. He started sailing at the age of 12 and has pursued the sport his whole life, spending many hours on or near the water. Alan joined the Royal Australian Navy at the age of 16 to see the world from the ocean.

Since then he has skippered numerous yachts to various locations around the world.

  • The West Coast of Australia and the Kimberley’s
  • Around Sydney, Brisbane and Darwin
  • Our near neighbours Dili, Timor Leste, Ambon
  • And further away Spain, Portugal, Morocco and Gibraltar

As a boy he taught himself to sail in and around Brisbane, learning about tides and currents by running aground on the mud flats when seeing how close to shore he could get.  Alan believes the best lessons are when you give something a go and learn from the experience.  His attitude of “Let’s do it and see” is applied to his training. Alan will encourage you to have a go and use your initiative to see what would happen. He will be there to guide you, for advice and to help analyse what you just learned from the experience.

Alan is admired and respected by his peers working in sail training, for his sailing knowledge and yacht handling skills. He has a great deal of experience and knowledge spanning different situations; weather, tides, currents and sometimes challenging port entries.  His vast experience enriches his lecturing. Alan is dedicated to training  to the RYA/YA syllabus standard.

Stories of his experiences around the world tend to be told when you go sailing with him. He enjoys good food, good company and good conversation and if they are all combined on a yacht he will be a very happy sailor.
